The Best Mahjong Video Games, Ranked

Mahjong is criminally under-represented in mainstream video games. The genre is dominated by tile-matching solitaire clones; the real four-player game is a niche so deep most reviewers do not know it exists. Here are the games that take the real game seriously.

1. Mahjong Soul

The reigning standard. Free, polished, with a depth of features that would embarrass most premium card games. Riichi rules. Browser, iOS, Android.

2. Hong Kong Mahjong Club

The classic Cantonese / Hong Kong rules client, on PlayStation in the late 1990s, recently re-released. Charming, slow, and accurate.

3. Riichi City

Mobile-first Riichi mahjong, with a cleaner UI than Mahjong Soul and a less anime-leaning visual identity.

4. Mahjong Master

Steam-only, single-player Riichi training. Excellent for learning the strategy of efficiency and defense without the stress of live play.

5. Yakuza Series Mahjong Minigames

Sega's Yakuza (Like a Dragon) games include surprisingly faithful Riichi mahjong as a side activity. If you already own the game, it is a free way to learn.

6. Real Mah Jongg

The best place to play American NMJL mahjong online. Interface dated, matchmaking strong, subscription required.

What is missing

There is still no premium, console-quality American mahjong game. If you build one, we will buy it.
