Free online mahjong falls into two camps: solitaire matching games (millions of them, mostly the same), and four-player real mahjong (a handful, varying in quality). Both have their place.
For real four-player mahjong
Mahjong Soul (Japanese Riichi)
Free, polished, with a thorough tutorial. Plays Riichi rules — a different ruleset from American — but the strategy concepts transfer beautifully. Browser and mobile.
Tenhou (Japanese Riichi)
The hardcore Riichi room. No graphics to speak of, the strongest player base in the world, and zero handholding. Browser only.
Real Mah Jongg (American, with subscription)
Not free past a trial, but worth mentioning — the only solid online room for American NMJL play.
For mahjong solitaire
The pattern is so well-known that the dozens of free sites — Mahjong Solitaire on Microsoft.com, Mahjong-Solitaire.com, AARP's free version, and the Google Doodle from 2021 — are all serviceable. Pick whichever has the cleanest interface and the fewest ads.
